Frank Gore plans to practice this week

Word out of 49ers headquarters is that Frank Gore plans on practicing this week. While there was extra motivation two weeks ago in Miami, there is still some motivation this coming Sunday. Clinton Portis is a fellow running back alumnus of the U and all those fellas (Portis, Gore, Willis McGahee and Edgerrin James) have a bit of a rivalry. Throw in the 22 yards needed to reach 1,000 for the third straight season and I’ll go on record as saying I’d be stunned if he didn’t play.

Speaking of the rushing attack, a look back at Sunday’s game shows not so much of one. Shaun Hill led the team with 45 rushing yards, while every-down back DeShaun Foster finished with 36 yards on 12 carries. Definitely not too spectacular. I’ll admit it’s a small sample size, but the 49ers have not exactly had an explosive rushing attack this season.

Statistically, this is something Danny could probably provide more insight on. However, I figured I’d give more of a birds eye view of it. The 49ers are averaging 98.5 rushing yards per game, good 26th in the league. They’re averaging exactly 4.0 yards per carry, which is the league average. Frank Gore has averaged 4.3 yards per carry this season, .4 yards below his career average, but .1 yards above last season.

Although the 49ers have had success running the ball at times, clearly it has been inconsistent this season. The question is why they’re struggling for consistency. One thing I would like to point out is that the 49ers have actually rushed the ball 17 more times this season than last season, with one game to go. Furthermore, Frank Gore was actually on pace to finish with 21 more carries than last season, before the injury. That’s a bit of a nebulous figure considering we don’t know the context of those rushes. One last interesting bit though (and encroaching on Danny’s territory) is that Frank Gore currently ranks 14th in DYAR among NFL running backs with a minimum of 100 carries. Last season, Gore finished 14th among NFL running backs in DYAR. I’ll leave further analysis to Danny, but that’s certainly an interesting coincidence.

In spite of all this, I’d imagine most of us were not all that satisfied with the rushing attack this season. It wasn’t awful, but it definitely lacked a certain something. Of course, we were also spoiled by Gore’s monstrous 2006. So what explains the results we’ve seen? Mike Martz is often the easy choice to blame. The offensive line was looking pretty bad early on, but seems to be coming around. In looking at just the Rams game, it seemed like they were doing a solid job of opening holes. They were beaten at the defensive line several times, but more often than animation movies not, holes were there. Of course, who knows if Gore would have seen holes Foster missed.

At the same time, several people have mentioned in the game threads and recaps that defenses don’t fear Foster like they fear Gore. Accordingly, they’re willing to play more against the pass and handle the run as it comes up. Does that mean Foster has lacked the ability to really make them pay then? It’s a tough call. Assuming he can go, what can we really expect adventure movies from Frank on Sunday against the Redskins? The Redskins have been rather solid on defense, so they should provide some sort of test for whomever is running the ball.

I honestly don’t know what I think about the 2008 rushing attack. Early on I think the offensive line was a significant part of the problem. Now, I don’t really know. DeShaun Foster was solid against Miami, but given that he finished with 76 yards, that’s not exactly glowing. So, right now we’re settling for less than good it seems like. I think just about anything is possible this Sunday. While I do think Gore will play, I also am not sure whether to expect him to play much past getting the 22 yards he needs. His weakest performance this year was a 26 yard effort in Dallas. Let’s hope that doesn’t come back up this Sunday.

It’s Not All That Wonderful A Life

if you have a grinchy little streak of cynicism, interpret this article from today’s new york times:wonderful? sorry, george, it’s a pitiful, dreadful life”it’s a wonderful life” is a terrifying, asphyxiating story about growing up and relinquishing your dreams, of seeing your father driven to the grave anterior to his time, of living develop into bitter, small-minded people. it is a story of being trapped, of compromising, of watching others move ahead and away, of stylish so filled with passion that you verbally wrong your children, their teacher and your oppressively perfect the missis. it is also a nightmare account of an endless nursing home renovation.it’s also about a banking crisis prompted by seeming fraud, and bare real negligence:and what about that banking issue? when he returns to the “real” bedford falls, george is saved by his friends, who open their wallets to cover an $8,000 shortfall at his savings and loan brought on every side when the evil mr. potter snatched a pay in mislaid by george’s idiot uncle, billy (thomas mitchell).but isn’t george that time liable for the missing funds, even if he has made restitution? i mean, if someone robs a bank, and then gives the money back, that person still robbed the bank, power?i checked my theory with frank j. clark, the district attorney for erie county upstate, where, as far as i can tell, the fictional bedford falls is set. he thought it over, and then agreed: george would still face prosecution and on prison constantly.”in terms of the theft, sure, you take the money and put it break, you in any case committed the larceny,” he said. “by giving the money back, you have mitigated in large measure what the sentence power be, but you are even now technically reprehensible of the offense.”the movie’s two scenarios of obsession in bedford falls are meant to show that it’s a much control superiors place to live in arrears to george’s mien there. but maybe that wouldn’t be the case long as regards. the supposedly nightmarish george-was-not at any time-born pottersville can be seen as a vibrant, active town with incandescent lights and lots of people driving an entertainment-based economy:not not is pottersville cooler and more hold up to ridicule than bedford falls, it also would have had a much, much stronger future. think about it: in everybody site george helps bring manufacturing to bedford falls. but since the era of “it’s a wonderful life” manufacturing in upstate new york has suffered terribly.on the other hand, pottersville, with its nightclubs and gambling halls, would almost certainly be in much gamester financial contours today. it might well be thriving.wow, pretty harsh. i’m safe most people would tranquil prefer to well- on the movie’s tender-hearted message about valuing household and friendship!

Obama adds another Republican to Cabinet

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) — President-elect Barack Obama has picked GOP Rep. Ray LaHood of Illinois to be his nominee for transportation secretary, two sources told CNN on Wednesday.

Barack Obama has picked Tom Vilsack, left, and Ken Salazar for Cabinet posts.

Rep. Ray LaHood of Illinois would be the second Republican in Obama’s Cabinet.

Two Democratic sources also said Obama will tap Mary Schapiro to head the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Schapiro is CEO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the largest nongovernment regulator for all securities firms doing business with the U.S. public. She is a former SEC commissioner and served as chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in 1994 during the Clinton Administration.

Obama will formally announce his choice of LaHood, a seven-term congressman from Peoria, at a press conference in Chicago on Thursday morning, the sources said.

LaHood is well-respected by Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill.

One of LaHood’s closest friends in Congress, fellow Illinois Republican Tim Johnson, said LaHood "has the ability to work both sides of the aisle well" and called him "an extraordinarily talented legislator."

Obama has so far chosen one other Republican for his Cabinet. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will stay on in the Obama administration.

Earlier on Wednesday, Obama announced former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack as his choice for agriculture secretary and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar as his choice for secretary of the interior.

Don’t Miss

"Together they will serve as guardians of the American landscape on which the health of our economy and the well-being of our families so heavily depend," Obama said at a news conference in Chicago.

Vilsack was a high-profile supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton during the presidential primaries after he briefly sought the Democratic presidential nomination.

Vilsack has championed the development of ethanol, an alternative energy, in Iowa — something that coincides with Obama’s vision for an energy-independent future, and something he can promote from the Department of Agriculture.

Vilsack, who dropped out of the presidential race in February 2007, is the fourth former presidential rival to join Obama’s team.

Vice president-elect Joe Biden; Hillary Clinton, Obama’s pick for secretary of state; and Bill Richardson, Obama’s pick for secretary of commerce, also sought the Democratic presidential nomination.

Could Garmin Nuviphone be running Android?

Garmin’s Nuviphone (you remember the one… first mentioned over a year ago, looked a bit nice?) has finally passed through the hallowed halls of the FCC, meaning a 2009 release date looks download sci-fi ever more likely.

Designed to be the first ever ‘GPS with a phone in it (that’s still a good phone)’, it has been seemingly mired in release limbo for a while.

Android

But now it has passed through the FCC checks according to Engadget, and these have shown that the device will be manufactured by Asus, who have recently joined the Open Handset Alliance in charge of developing Android.

Watch desperate housewives season 5 episode 11

Oh, and guess who else has jumped on board the Android ship? That’s right, Garmin. While we can understand why Asus would be getting involved, the only other option for Garmin to be there would be to develop some GPS software to integrate into the handsets.

But surely that could be done through the application marketplace? It makes far more sense for Garmin to get Android on a handset… now THAT would be a phone that could get the GPS makers into the public consciousness.

Garmin has been developing its own OS for the handset, but we’ll do a little more digging to find out more… watch this space.
