* There’s no question that pop superstar Fergie is “over the moon” happy in love with actor Josh Duhamel. There’s no doubt the handsome, lip-locked couple will tie the knot. However, her lips were sealed about the exact date when I talked with her — even though she proudly showed me her engagement ring and chatted about marriage and starting a family.

But in talking to her friends during her Las Vegas visit with Josh and their respective families, it looks as if five days from now — this Saturday, Jan. 10 — Fergie and Josh will marry and become the new hottest Mr. and Mrs. in show business.

Fergie, 33, confirmed to me that they will marry. “I love being in love,” she said. “It’s such a great feeling, and it’s so right.” Try as I could, though, she wouldn’t budge on the exact date and place (some rumors pinpoint Southern California), so I switched the subject to babies.

She told me that she definitely wants children — but that is going to wait for a while for a couple of reasons!

“First,” she said, “let’s get the rest of all this weight off that I put on. Second, we’re going out with another Black Eyed Peas tour, and that has to be wrapped before we begin to start a family. But, yes, we both want babies!”

The three-time Grammy Award-winning artist explained that she’d gained 15 pounds for the upcoming movie based on the Broadway musical “Nine,” in which she plays a salty hooker.

“I literally pigged out and stopped working out,” she said. “I went to In-N-Out Burger and just ate what I wanted. I really went for it. I loved it. I felt a complete glutton because I didn’t say no to anything, and I knew I was getting bigger by the moment without even looking in a mirror. I moved differently because my body was getting bigger.” She co-stars with Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Dame Judi Dench and Daniel Day-Lewis in the movie.

Now, though, she’s fighting to be able to squeeze into her Fergalicious and glamorous wedding gown.

“I’m not shedding the pounds right off, though. It’s not easy trying to get healthy again and stay that way. It’s hard because, whereas I gave up working out, now I’m back working out every day. We’re going hiking, and I’m doing tons of sit-ups and walking and running twice as much as Josh does just to keep up with him.”

She explained that she’s got to get it all off before long, though, because it’s not just the wedding but also to wear swimsuits at the beach when they go off on their honeymoon vacation! And also because this year’s new Black Eyed Peas tour is just ahead on her calendar.

“That’s going to be really big,” Fergie told me. “I’m excited about that new tour. I just love all that hard work and energy. But when that’s over with, we will start to think about a family of our own. Let me get the weight off this time before I start putting it on again with that,” she laughed.

* Nightlife observers are convinced that a major shakeup of nightclubs is about to get underway now that the 800-pound Encore resort gorilla named XS has opened. One expert told me: “Watch Victor Drai’s XS put at least three clubs out of business by spring, and you’re going to see others undergoing major renovations and remodels to compete, with the remainder fighting for survival.” Tonight is the debut of XS’s hospitality industry night, and experts will be watching its expected double-whammy impact on locals!

Meantime, for three consecutive nights, multiplatinum R&B star Ray J partied at Poetry nightclub in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, and now I’m hearing solid rumors that he will become a new partner there. “He loved the club that much,” one of my reliable sources told me, “and he wants to buy it.” I know Poetry owners Mike Goodwin and Branden Powers were in heated lunchtime business discussions at the new T&T Mexican eatery inside the Luxor over the weekend. I’m betting you’ll hear by midweek that the I’s have been dotted and the T’s have been crossed on a contract that makes Ray J, real name William Norwood Jr., a partner in the upscale hip-hop nightspot. When the sexy singer tossed out thousands of $$$ in a “Sexy Lady” contest there over the weekend, he was definitely celebrating something special! Ray J, who is the younger brother of R&B princess Brandy, debuts his new show “For the Love of Ray J” next month on VH1, where women from across the country compete for his favors and attention.

Among the candidates for Republican National Committee chairman, there’s no question Michael Steele is among the most recognizable — a political celebrity thanks to his work for Fox News and run for U.S. Senate in 2006.

Aside from his political celebrity — and knack for being a good talking head — there’s little else about the man that would make him a good chairman. While much has been written about his candidacy and the reasons conservatives should be skeptical, time is running out to convince the 168 members of the RNC they should steer clear of him. Here’s why:

Steele boasts that his chairmanship of GOPAC qualifies him to run the RNC. He cites GOPAC’s work to elect Republicans as good preparation. So how did GOPAC fare under Steele’s leadership? During the 2008 cycle, GOPAC gave 11 candidates seeking U.S. House seats nearly $20,000. Six won and five lost.

Among GOPAC’s expenditures in 2008 was $5,000 to Steele for Maryland, even though Steele wasn’t on the ballot. The money probably went to pay off Steele’s 2006 campaign debt. It also happened to be the third largest expenditure for GOPAC, raising questions about the organization’s priorities under his leadership.

Money has been a problem for Steele in the past. Jennifer Skalka of National Journal’s Hotline reported that when Steele’s consulting business struggled financially, two banks threatened to place liens on his house. Although Steele cleared his debts, these financial issues are factors that must be considered for anyone seeking the RNC chairmanship.

Steele’s well-documented role with the Republican Leadership Council and association with co-founder Christie Todd Whitman is perhaps the most egregious political error he’s made. Any conservative who partners with the liberal Whitman must be viewed skeptically. Steele claims he was trying to broaden the party’s base by appealing to moderates. “We have to elect moderates in the party,” he told CBN’s David Brody.

One of those moderates Steele supported was former Rep. Wayne Gilchrist, a classic RINO if there ever was one. Gilchrist faced a primary challenge from conservative Andy Harris, a Maryland state senator with strong backing from the Club for Growth. It didn’t matter to Steele. He threw his support to Gilchrist. Harris went on to win the GOP primary, prompting Gilchrist to turn on the GOP and endorse Harris’ Democrat opponent.

Is this the type of judgment we could expect from Steele at the RNC? The answer is yes. How do we know? As Matt Lewis reported, Steele has tapped Blaise Hazelwood to run his RNC race, meaning there’s a good chance she would follow him to the RNC if he is elected. During the disastrous 2006 election cycle, it was Hazelwood who ran media and political operations for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Recall that the NRSC lost six seats that cycle and, as a result, the Republican majority in the Senate. Under Hazelwood’s direction, the NRSC spent $1.2 million in the GOP primary to save traitorous Lincoln Chafee from a challenge by conservative Steve Laffey.

It’s not just Steele’s political judgment that raises serious concerns. When he was running for U.S. Senate, Steele did not sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge from Americans for Tax Reform. If there’s one issue where all Republicans should be in agreement, it’s tax policy. Grover Norquist should press Steele and the five other candidates on this point at tomorrow’s RNC chairman’s debate.

Michael Steele is the wrong man to run the RNC. Unfortunately, he is likely one of the frontrunners for the job, given his status as a political celebrity. Unless conservatives unite in opposition, the Republican Party could very well end up in worse shape than it already is.

As families gather this week to celebrate and share comedy movies, we want to take this opportunity to wish one and all a joyous holiday, which ever holiday you celebrate. For this is a season of several holidays, Christmas not the least among them. There are other celebrations at this time of year that are as important to their celebrants. And there are people out there who don’t want you to recognize this fact. Again the year, the Florida-based Liberty Council has published its annual, “Naughty and Nice List,” a compilation of businesses the group believes are being unfair by recognizing some of their customers might celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanza in addition to, or instead of, celebrating Christmas. On the “naughty” list are companies who’s websites are guilty of the heinous crime of saying, “Happy Holidays,” instead of “Merry Christmas.” Yeah, that’s it. We’d contend it’s fantasy movies not really the words that matter. It’s the thought behind the words at the crux of the matter. The phrase, “Happy Holidays,” recognizes there’s more than one celebration at this time of year. It expresses a desire on the part of the companies to include all their customers in their thoughts. Liberty Council doesn’t apparently see it that way, going so far as to tell people to boycott those companies that wish shoppers a Happy Holiday. Now, it’s inarguably Liberty Council’s right to express its thoughts on the matter. Just as it’s our right to think the whole idea is counterproductive. And it’s your right to shop where you want to and to base that decision on any reason, or no reason, at all. But we think the deeper issue here is exclusionism, creating division among different parts of society at a time we should be rallying together. As a culture, we’re in the middle of some difficult times, to say the least. Families are concerned about their future in an economically topsy-turvy world. Whether a store clerk or a business website says “Happy Holidays” or “Merry Christmas” should really be the least of our worries. The basic issue should be what’s in our hearts, rather than what’s on a banner in a store. Keeping the spirit of the season, a spirit of love and giving, is more important. There’s plenty to be concerned about this year without adding to it. So keep the spirit you hold dear close. And keep your family and friends closer. We wish you all the best of the season.

It is never fun sitting around after a tough loss. For the boys’ basketball team of Lincoln-Sudbury, this was a harsh reality. The team had both of its games postponed last week, and has been itching to return to the court. “We’re excited to get back on the court and show the other DCL teams what we are all about,” said junior Billy Bereszniewicz. The layoff has also been hard for the team’s shooters. Players like captain Alex Benoit want to go out and prove that they still have the shooting touch after they did not play to their expectations against Weston. Players like Ronnie Fernandez cannot wait to get back on the court and continue to shoot well like they did against Weston. “Ronnie’s shots are absolutely ridiculous,” said Bereszniewicz. “Coach (Ben) Okiwe would never let him shoot those NBA range threes before, but he is trying a new strategy of letting us players take our shot.” According to the junior point guard, each player develops a shot that they are most comfortable with and while it may not be the smartest shot, it is a shot that the player feels comfortable taking. Both Bereszniewicz and senior captain Mike Antonellis feel that this is important in keeping a shooter’s momentum in between games. The new, more relaxed, strategy by the coach is even more important during a long layoff. “I think it was more restricting last year,” said Antonellis. “ I have seen a noticeable difference between this year and last year. I think it makes everybody feel looser and allows everybody to have more fun. I think it was a great addition to coach’s strategy despite the fact that it does not really effect me because I try to stay down low.” The team seems to be embracing this decision by their coach, a decision that will hopefully lead to more shots - and more points. Coming off a long bye, as well as a tough loss, coaches often like to stir their lineups up. Okiwe is no exception. “He has done it before,” said Antonellis. “And I would not be surprised if he did it again.” Okiwe is a noted fan of Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski and this is a strategy that coach Krzyzewski often uses. Recently, Duke lost a heartbreaker to Michigan, a team it had already beaten earlier in the season. The Blue Devils then had 11 days before their next game (L-S has 10). In their next game, Coach K started five new starters. The end result, you may ask? A 43-point win over UNC-Asheville, followed by an 18-point win over then ranked number seven Xavier. This strategy has clear success and so it is a strategy that may be used by the L-S squad. “I don’t think he would sit all five starters,” said Antonellis. “But there was a game last year where he sat four of them.” “It is a long fall from the penthouse to the outhouse,” said Alabama coach Nick Saban in an interview with ESPN. It could be wondered, then, if the opposite is true. Is it a long climb from laughingstock to the juggernaut? The L-S basketball team looks to find out and with the subtle yet powerful coaching moves, the team could find that the climb may be tough but it may be fun too. The L-S basketball team would like to wish happy holidays to the members of the Lincoln and Sudbury communities, and a word from the wise to all the young basketball players out there from captain Antonellis, “Those holiday tournaments are tough coming off Christmas, but they will get you to where I am today. I was in your place once too.”

2008 has seen Bleacher Report grow an enormous amount. Many great writers have joined this past year, and many have left, particularly in the World Football section.

For the past few days, myself, Salaar Shamsi, Andrew McNair, Shyam Parthasarathi and Maire Ofeire have been devising a list of ten finalists for the B/R World Football Writer of the Year award.

Each of those writers losted above were given a shortlist of 25 writers, the top 25 at the time, plus a few who had left earlier on in the year, and were asked to chose their top ten.

These votes were put together to come up with a final ten, all of whom you can vote to be your Writer of the Year!

The votes will be write-in votes rather than those on a poll to ensure credibility and fairness in the voting. Needless to say, you cannot vote for yourself, as if anyone was thinking of doing so!
